Review:

The raging powerviolence act from Oxnard, ‘Nails’ is back, but not with an album but with a two track EP. The band has kept their sound distinct since their inception in 2007.

I have heard a lot of grindcore and similar stuffs but I never really got well with it, mostly dismissing it as cheesy and painfully boastful. Also, I have heard some hardcore punk related stuffs and I was pleased with the genre, making me an instant fan and ventured more into that territory. Few acts I found were kinda redeeming while some were not that good enough. However, when I came across this band, ‘Nails’, I was really surprised with its epic amalgamation of hardcore punk, grindcore, death metal and powerviolence (mixture of thrash metal, hardcore punk and grindcore) and crust punk. However this combination of genres seems like they’ve invented a new genre i.e. ‘chaotic hardcore’ or ‘chaoticogrind’ music.

Let’s talk about the first track, ‘I Don’t Want To Know You’ provides an epic sound delivery with raging mathcore inspired heavy guitars and epic vocal delivery. I found Todd Jones vocals reminiscing and full of rage but sometimes it goes over the top. In this case, a question may arise, ‘What he’s angry about?’. However, such vocals also plays an important role in their music. Despite less lyrics and a time duration of 90sec, such heaviness and brutality is a peacful delight.

Second track, ‘Endless Resistance’ features thrash metal legend, ‘Max Cavalera’ (also formerly of Sepultura). Todd’s and Max’s
vocals on this track is a match made in heaven. The track started out really good with great guitar riffs. The drums on this track was normal but it really sounded really good. Lyrics were well written, in fact much better than track 1. There is only flaw in this track, the riffs become repititive in the end which may bore the listener on this otherwise great track.

FINAL VERDICT:

The band portrays the rage and brutality in the music in the weirdest and chaotic manner possible. This chaotic epicness is a real treat to your ears. I know that, this band is not everyone’s cup of tea as their musical combination of grindcore, crust punk, powerviolence and hardcore punk is considered chaotic and extremely out of the bounds. But still I highly recommend this band and their music in general, including this EP.

My Rating: 8/10
